right...i'm blogging instead of unpacking. well, there isnt much to unpack anyways.
so yeah. HAVASU! it was so much fun. i'm soooo dead sore right now and in DIRE, DIRE need of a nice massage. but let's begin from the start.
well, first off it was a really last minute thing, even though it's been kinda sorta planned for months. i didn't know if i was going until wednesday night. julia and i didn't want to go if the boat wasn't going, and i hadn't told my parents until wed. night for our friday morning departure. i was so afraid they woudln't let me go until i knew as much information as i could to reassure them i'd be okay. but they said yes pretty quickly. i guess i should give them more credit.
mm...6AM wake up call to gear up and pack and head to irvine to meet julia. there was some traffic on the 15 and when we stopped in Lenwood to eat, there was this huge backlog of traffic on the road heading towards the freeway because there was a truck that had stalled or something and it was blocking the street, along with some police cars. fortunately it had cleared out by the time we finished eating (which took a while too since all these tour buses decided to drop off their passengers at In and Out) so it wasn't so bad. at the 15-40 junction, the part of the 15 that we saw heading to vegas was JAMMED bumper to bumper. i'm glad we split off at that point. i went 85 the rest of the way to havasu and we made it at our estimate arrival time, 3:30pm.
for one thing, i've never gone desert camping before. i knew not to expect big trees and stuff, but it was still something new to get used to. and good lord. it was SOOOO HOT. as soon as we got out of the car i wanted to get back inside. even in the shade. 116 degrees! hehe, julia and i didn't even unpack (well the tent wasn't set up yet either); we just changed into our swimsuits and went to the "beach" of the lake. the water's SOO nice. it wasn't really a beach because there were rocks and not much sand, but it goes shallow pretty far out, which i like. it was nice getting in the water. then john and his friends, jonathan and david, came up in john's boat and we all went out on the lake. the lake's really big, i don't think i've ever really been on a lake before.
on the lake, i went inner tubing for the first time, which is where an inner tube is connected to the boat through a rope and the boat just tows it along, and you hold onto the tube's handles and keep from falling off by leaning into the turns and hanging on. it was pretty fun, and my upper body is feeling the effects of it still. julia and i have matching bruises on our upper arm to prove it. david and john are pretty good at it, they can stay on a really long time and it takes a lot of speed and centripetal force from turns to get them off the tube. david got really high in the air one time he fell, about 4 feet up. it's kinda nice when you fall off, cuz then you do'nt have to hold on anymore and you can just lay in the water waiting for the boat to pick you up. so we did that for a while and then headed towards the London Bridge area for a fireworks-viewing spot.
there were SOOO many boats lined up on the bridgewater canal area, chock full of people drinking and dancing and music blaring. the others (scott, jean, sean, and brandon) brought drinks and i had one of my girly drinks and some wine before i stopped. i did NOT want another Liquid Lounge episode. the fireworks were okay, a little far off, but it was cool. some of them were pretty big. after the fireworks were over we headed back on the lake towards the campsite and launch ramp. it's scary in the dark, and it's difficult to see the other boats except for their little light in the front. we proceeded to have a late bbq eating carne asada and ribs and chilling. it was quite nice in the dark, 86 degree weather. julia and i didn't need sheets or anything over us while sleeping.
i woke up really early b/c the sun's brightness was bearing down, but i had an eyemask to block it so i managed to sleep for another hour or so. i think i slept pretty well because i had a couple of dreams, one about people putting on art exhibits for each other and another about me driving back and forth between havasu and irvine to go to a hospital shift or work or something. so when i finally did get up, i thought it'd be like, 9 or 10 or so. nope. it was 7:30am. and it was getting hot. after a light breakfast of granola bar, i went out on the boat with the guys. i like the boat. it's so much cooler out on the lake and i'd jump in every so often to cool off. the guys played king of the bow, which is just wrestling each other off to see who'd stay standing the longest without falling off, for a while, and scott, john, and david did some wakeboarding, which is like snowboarding on the water. it looks really cool, but apparently it's really difficult to get up onto the water because you start from a sitting position. the water was really choppy saturday and it's hard to do all these water activities with choppy water.
the 2nd session of the day, i stayed on the boat. i didn't want to go out into the 116 degree weather without any water to jump into. so julia, jean, and jonathan came up, and scott came around for the 2nd round too, and we went inner tubing some more, this time prepared with cameras for pictures and some video. we were going to head over to this burger place where you can drive up on the boat and order from there, but after john finished his tubing turn the engine wouldn't start.
yeah.
so they tried getting it started but it wouldn't stay on, and one boat came along and was nice enough to tow us to the launch ramp. the tow ride was pretty relaxing, jon and i were talking and scott took a nap. when we got to the ramp we had to wait a while for jon and john to get the car. we were there for quite some time, covered in towels to protect ourselves. one man on another boat joked, "are there people under those towels?" heh, it was pretty hot. the other guys came eventually and swam the boat towards the car (julia got pictures of it), it was pretty funny, 4 guys with their heads popping out, pulling the boat.
by then it was like, 4:30 and none of us had eaten since 8:30, and even that was scant. i was damn hungry, so some of us went to denny's and the others went to in and out. it was really nice and air conditioned inside, we stayed there for 2 hours, napping, chatting, relaxing.
we didn't want to deal with the morning heat and traffic, and since the boat was down, we decided to pack up and leave that night. i went for one last swim at sundown, the water felt really nice, i was going to miss it. not the heat tho. it was nice...i was lying on my back (in sunglasses and flip flops too) and some jetskiers honked at me and asked if i was okay. how nice of them. so we all packed up and left around 9pm. we got back to irvine around 2am and i just fell asleep as soon as i went to bed. (after cooling off about arriving at 2am and opening the apartment door because it was UNLOCKED for the 2nd time at night. argh! these new roomies are something to get used to, but that's another story). it was nice waking up late and feeling the breeze through my window. but then i tried getting up and felt all this soreness. and that's why i need a massage.
all in all, quite an enjoyable 4th of july weekend. i'm really glad i went.
