Where is My Mind?

6.16.2003

i'm officially a college graduate. kinda weird feelings have been running through me all week.

hm, my last post was on the 4th...what's happened since then...

Meera's party friday night was pretty awesome. even more so because i was totally sober and still had a good time. it was there that mat gave me the idea of a lifetime, how to decorate my cap for graduation. more on that later.

finals week sucked. i had my 2 hardest finals, neuro and neurolab, on the same day, 1 hour apart. and i totally screwed up on my behavioral neurobio final...we were supposed to pit 2 of the animals we studied against each other and discuss what's going on in their brains. so i start talking about the owl and the rat. however, i go on and on about the owl brain system thinking i'm getting it right, how it's evaluating sounds and such...but looking at my notes later on, i realized that the brain cells and circuitry i was discussing was NOT the owl, but the cricket!!! i was soo scared. i emailed my TA and he said it should be okay cuz it's still processing sound, but i dunno. i hope it turns out okay. neuro lab was okay too, but kinda long, and i didn't study as hard as i woudl've liked. psych on thrusday was a joke. most of the questions were from the previous midterms and i finished it in 5 minutes. my last final wasn't a test, but an electronic submission for my bio honors seminar which i finished at 3am on friday...kinda odd having my last final not be a test, but hey, i was done, and i celebrated by going to sleep and sleeping in.

all during finals week i was also busy prepping for graduating...it was pretty busy. shana came by to visit on thursday (janice and jon came by too) and we all hung out at laura rickhoff's, playing maracas and other games. friday morning i took shana, laura, and nancy out to newport pier. it's been soo long since i've been to the beach, i should get out there more often before i leave. mat and luis held a bbq that afternoon and a lot of reps were there. luis's dad made the BEST carne asada off the grill...it was soooo good. that was a lot of fun, i'm going to miss hanging out with the reps sooo much. they're all nice and sweet and funny and warm and welcoming and overall really great people.

oh yeah, the honors convocation was that night too. mom and dad came by. i thankfully got to sit next to laura rickhoff so there was someone to talk to during the ceremony. my name was listed in the program wrong; bio screwed up and said i got the dean's award when i actually got the holcomb scholarship...so my name was listed wrong, and i had to scramble thursday and friday to get my awards right on the card that the guy reads off during the ceremony. laura and i left early. it was running way too long and way too boring for our liking.

dustin's party was that night as well. laura f. and the others were scrambling to do stuff for the new girl that's staying, carla. why, i'm not sure, seeign that we hardly met her, but i guess it's nice, but carla never ended up stopping by. ohwell. i went to dustin's with albert and steff stopped by later on. funny how at 10pm there was hardly anyone there but by 10:45 it was pretty kicking. mat made me a 7, 7, which got me tipsy for like, an hour. it was pretty good. steff said i make a cute drunk, talkin all happy and such. by the time i sobered up i was talking with sean and chris, and chris kept pointing at me, saying "WASTED!!!!" even though i really wasn't. chris was pretty drunk off the keg. sean and i were talking and hopefully he'll be in DC when i'm in DC. it'd be nice to have someone familiar around. and then when reps come to visit us we can all hang out =). a lot of reps were there, and albert and steff had a good time too. it was way fun. when i got home at 1 everyone was still up, decorating their caps and laura was pretty tipsy...and i'll leave it at that. i went to sleep at 3. so did everyone else.

i really wanted to go to other ppl's graduations, but stupid bio's smack in the middle so i end up missing a lot of ppl's. so sad. i got there at 12 to line up and took tons of pictures with my bio buddies. i guess all my worrying about having no one to sit with (last year) went away because i ended up sitting with laura rickhoff, holly, and elisabeth. i totally could've sat with ryan and brian, or the hrpn-ers. everyone kept giving me compliments on my cap decoration: i had a brain-shaped stress ball that i cut in half and color coded the cortices with markers, glued them onto springs, and attached them to my cap. it was awesome (mat gave me the idea after he said he'll put a molecular model of methane on a spring on his cap). i'm such a nerd. hehe.

so the ceremony was pretty cool. dima and his buddies were in the section next to us and they were pretty rowdy and excited. it kinda rubbed off on me because i started screaming too...soo hard to believe 4 years has already passed and i'm out of college. but more introspection to come. anyways i got excited too as we were walking down and when we got to our seats, and when i was walking up to get in line to go on stage. my physio lab TA, who got her phd, totally remembered me and said "go naomi!" as i passed by her. it was neat i also saw dan, and quyen in the crowd and they called out to me as well. it was soo exciting. too bad i coudlnt' really appreciate it because mom gave me this humongous lei that displaced one of my springs and so i was busy trying to resecure it as i went on stage. i wanted to curtsy or bow or blow kisses to the crowd or something, but totaly forgot and never really got to cherish the moment of having my name being called. i did hear the big cheer from teh crowd though =) the ceremony was thankfully short (1.5 hours) and it wasn't tooo hot, there was some breeze every once in a while.

afterwards it was all family...i couldn't find any of my friends after the ceremony. i ran into marcus and erick though...it was soo neat seeing marcus again after so long, back in the days in rohan. i wish i coudlv'e caught up with them longer, but i'm horrible at mingling and i was too into th emoment of trying to find my family. tons of people came out to see me, and there was tons of picture taking. since the ceremony was really short we had tons of time to kill before diner, so we just chilled at BC's for a while.

maggiano's for dinner...yumm....the lack of sleep was finally getting to me on the way there and kate said i looked lethargic as i headed over to the table, talking to a duck that was walking nearby. i got more excited as dinner went on and woke up. there was even more people at the dinner, some of which i hadn't seen in months/years, let alone talk to for an extended period of time. it was a lot of fun, and we all stayed there for about 3-4 hours chatting. it was great.

after all that died down my parents dropped me off back at the pigsty mess that had overtaken the apartment and i tried to salvage some of it while waiting for my ride to scott's party. amanda agreed to come with me and i had a gut feeling i should've driven, but i was under the impression that i would get piss drunk and not be able to drive so i asked john to drive us. at first the party was okay, i finally drank that vodka blue that's been sitting in my fridge for like, a year and a half, i don't remember. but then they didn't have any more mixable drinks, just beer, and i hate beer. and i guess the events of the day were starting to get to me and i got really really tired. so did amanda. we didnt' want to stay there too long either. which is why i had that gut feeling i should've driven. anyway, scott and i also did half a rum shot which gave me a temporary sense of awakeness but it died down pretty quickly. amanda and i didnt' end up getting hom till 3am which neither of us liked but it's my fault for not speaking up. or not driving in the first place, or asking the others who left early for a ride back. i feel so bad.

so, the day ended on not a terribly good note. i went to sleep and woke up and drove home. artie treated us all out to brazilian bbq over in burbank...nice, i didn't know there was one closer to us than rowland heights. so that was our father's day, and i opened my many cards and gifts and reclaimed my bedroom. i should put a "no dumping" sign on my door or something to prevent ppl from dumping all their shit into my room and forcing me to reorganize and clean it up when i come back. fortunatly it wasn't too bad when i got home. but i still have some work to do.

ok i'm tired. enough reiteration of what i did. more introspection next time.
