Where is My Mind?

5.10.2003

yay, what a fun week. mucho thanks to everyone who came to things this week! you're much loved =)

SAT - PCN was pretty good. although reviews from ppl who've seen others say last year's was a lot better, i still enjoyed myself. kaba does these cool video breaks with commercials/movie previews with a filipino twist. i knew like, 3-4 people in the entire show. guess it kinda goes to show how distant i am from all this cultural stuff. i dunno, i just was never into all of it. i'm pretty proud of how my closest friends are from all ethnicities. i was especially proud of how my group of friends in high school and college are from all areas of the campus and not just like, the filipino clique or anything. sometimes i think to myself, i should've joined, but it's usually a passing thought. anyway...kaba modern's really good. i felt soo bad for them when their music kept skipping and stopping, which totally ruins their flow of dancing.

SUN - big birthday brunch! it was really nice. 36 people came, half of which were ppl my age-ish =) i was very happy. nice food, nice champagne, nice company, nice view. we were playing with the crystal glasses making noise by running our fingers along the rims. i wasn't able to do it then =P but read on!

TUES - i got really lazy after classes ended. i went to lab for like, 10 minutes. christa was out of town so there wasn't much to do. so i went home and vegged. didn't go to bio b/c i didn't feel like it. john stopped by for a bit before we all went to dinner to drop off his gift, which was nice of him since he wasn't able to make it to dinner. dinner was good - yousuke had recommended i try a "chuhai" which is half sake half fruit juice. i had green apple flavor - it was really good! and you didn't taste the alcohol, but it hits you just the same - i was really...uh...sway-ie during dinner b/c i downed it so i'd sober up by the time dinner ended. it was a nice dinner, i'm glad everyone liked it. the c-reps gave me the cutest little wagon of toys. i got lots of gifts =) the best thing - 3 copies of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. that was fun. thanks again so much!!! afterwards we went up to the social science structure and hit away at this year's pinata - a green dragon aptly named "flamey." it was a lot of fun too...especially b/c there were new people involved.

WED - in the morning i tried to do the glass thing just for the hell of it. and i did it!!!!!

THURS - dessert making! i finally got to use the ice cream maker i'd bought on amazon as an impulse buy. we made cookies, ice cream, and beignets. The beignets turned out really wellll...inah said it reminded her of funnel cake. i thought i'd have enough to make one batch, but it turns out i have a lot of mix left...so i'll be making more beignets in the coming weeks =) yum. new orleans all over again. the ice cream turned out kinda soft so we left it in the freezer for friday. ironic thing...i totally forgot to take pictures throughout the night. it wouldve been cool to get a pic of the beignets poofing out when i put them in the hot oil.

FRI - like i expected, a nice, low key get together at club stanford =). chicken and waffles are always good, and i made chocolate covered strawberries with a different recipe than before - one recipe suggested using shortening while melting the chocolate chips - it really makes a difference! the chocolate had a nicer consistency and it stayed on the strawberry better, and david commented that the strawberries were more juicy than before. Shortening - the secret ingredient to everything. life's greatest invention =) we watched the matrix cuz it was on tv and played "which scene's missing?" b/c they kept editing out the best parts! they edited out spoon boy! boo...i finally introduced my friends to Kings; they like it a lot the most hilarious segment was when laura drew "categories" and her category was "Drunk david-isms." i could NOT stop laughing...and i broke out my new Mad Gab game. fun night. we got home around 4am. i had 4 hours of sleep before...

SAT - i had to wake up at 8 to drop off my poster at the UROP symposium. i went back and went to sleep some more...the poster session went pretty well...the family of this one girl that works in the lab next to mine stopped by my poster and really enjoyed my study. a couple of other friends came in surprise so i walked them through also, and my parents were there to finally see what i did last year. it was pretty cool. as i was walking around towards the end i came across an fMRI poster and i asked the guy how he thought of working with that kind of stuff since i'll be working with it next year...and he said it's a lot of work but it's pretty interesting. voxels...lots of new terminology to learn!.

ok time to pack for home.
