ohhh....going through major trip withdrawal right now...
let's reminisce!
Tuesday: well, first thing was that i woke up late - sarah's alarm hadn't gone off or something and i only woke up after quyen called my cell phone. sarah and i managed to get past all the traffic heading to john wayne but still had to wait a long time for the security check, and then they didn't even check our car! that was lame. so i was a little late meeting up with yousuke, quyen, and karen at the terminal, but there wasn't a line or anything. all in all it went rather smoothly and we took off in time. The flight was pretty interesting; they played hula music and stuff. i had a window seat and the flight wasn't full at all so quyen and i managed to have the middle seat function as a storage area. The snacks were good (can't really say that about the meal)....macadamia nuts before the movie and warm chocolate chip cookies afterwards. That was a highlight. Other random thoughts during the flight were that at some points, the clouds and ocean looked like an upside down sky. it was really interesting. and also i could swear i thought i saw rainbows on the clouds. as we were nearing the islands i saw the coasts of the other islands...SOO pretty! bright blue shallow water ocean and white sandy beaches with snippets of coral. we also flew by waikiki on the way to the airport and yousuke said he saw our hotel from the plane. So the first thing we did was get to our hotel, but apparently we weren't in a hotel room, but a private condominium - on the penthouse! Go Yousuke. =) overlooking the entire ocean front! the view from our room was so awesome - too bad the hyatt regency towers were blocking the rest of the view, but it was still awesome nonetheless. we took up both penthouses. it had so much potential but it was rather trashy and themeless. quyen took the room with mirrors on the ceiling! that was way kinky. karen took the sofa bed, leaving me with the best room in our side, on the ocean front corner. in the mornings i could see the sunrise - it's so pretty with the partly cloudy skies and the cool breeze up on the 32nd floor.
we did some food shopping at the local grocery and abc stores (47 in waikiki! one around almost every block, it's crazy)...food's really expensive over there b/c they have to import it from the mainland...$8 for a gallon of milk or orange juice! oh yeah, and the alcohol =). lots of mai tai supplies. after stocking up, quyen and i wanted to hang out in the hotel's rooftop jacuzzi, but there was a big group of people in there so we decided to swim in the pool for a bit. now, it was about 5:30 pm in the evening so it's a little cooler than before, and up on the roof there was more of a breeze than what one would feel on the ground. the poolwater was still warm, which was good, but whatever was above the water felt the brunt of convection from the wind. we were afraid to get out of the pool because it was going to be so cold! we made yousuke get the jacuzzi in our penthouse ready for us to warm up, hee hee. (that's in the kinky side...there were no shower curtains or anything separating the shower from the rest of the bathroom, AND there were mirrors everywhere there too!) so quyen and i scrambled out of the pool and ended up in the sauna before heading down to the jacuzzi. the jacuzzi was pretty neat too, jets and everything. afterwards we just hung out, listening to the music from luaus on the beach. They like playing "Brown Eyed Girl" because i heard it at least twice .
Wednesday: I woke up to an awesome sunrise. We made breakfast with our new stash of eggs, sausage, and tater tots, and rice. We took a tour to Pearl Harbor in the morning. Our tour guide was pretty funny, he kept calling everyone "cousin" and told us some Hawaiian facts. (here's a snip: "Aloha cousin! What's up, yo?") Pearl Harbor was pretty eerie. i never knew the USS arizona was still there, bodies and oil and everything. i mean, what are you supposed to do, smile big in the pictures? it was somber, like the intro video said. after that the bus took us around the city, and we took pictures and stuff, pretty mundane stuff. When we got back, we had time to go to the beach! Unfortunately it was around 4:30 or so, so it was cooler than usual, but it was still nice. it only got chilly when the sun went behind a cloud. But the beach is cool. There isn't much sand so it's kinda crowded. And at first the sand is rough, but then it turns nice and fine towards the water. And the water's soooo warm! And it's stays shallow pretty far out, and then you hit the coral or rocks after a while. That hurts, especially if you're trying to stay above the waves. After the beach we walked to Ono's Restaturant, a mom n' pop place Katy recommended. I was afraid it wouldn't turn out well b/c the others were complaining about the walk, but everyone ended up liking it. Fast service, pretty good food, and it was cheap! Later that night Micki arrived and she shared the room with Quyen.
Thursday: Hehe, Mr. K...We had the pleasure of having Mr. K drive us to Diamond Head. He's this middle aged Korean guy with a heavy accent...he's so funny. he would cut people off and drive on the wrong side of the road and drop us off and ...i guess you had to be there, but it was pretty funny. so the hike...we were so unprepared for it. quyen and i were in flip flops, and i forgot to put sunblock on, but at least i had a bottle of water. Quyen and i managed to do it in flip flops, and there was a tunnel too before we went to the summit. the hike wasn't too bad, but there's one point in which you have to climb 100 + stairs straight. But the view from the top is awesome...360 degrees of green lush hawaiian landscape and waikiki and the beach. After walking back down and the drive back (another fun filled drive with Mr. K shouting out the window) we were soooo tired. i wanted to take a 15 minute nap before walking around town, but i ended up napping for about an hour and 15 minutes. After that, i walked around town, getting my sense of direction, and took pictures along the streets and the beach. Kalakaua avenue is pretty nice, they have flowers in baskets along the lampposts, like in cambridge...but in hawaii. and i walked along the beach and picked up a few rocks (for ki; i couldn't find any shells). there's this one area that juts out along the ocean and you get a nice view of waikiki and diamond head, and i also saw some tropical fish in the water alongside the area. it was nice walking along the beach in the sand, but it was a little quiet b/c i was by myself. after that i met up with the girls at the International Marketplace and shopped a little. (yousuke had gone deep sea fishing). Quyen's friend Trung came that night to join us too, and he brought a grip of junk food with him - ramen, chips, dip, and boob shaped pasta, among other things. oh, and wine too. We busted open the alcohol and i learned how to play Queens (or Kings), a really really fun drinking game. i managed to take a shot of Parrot Bay rum and some hard lemonade, and some mai tai. i got really sleepy afterwards and while i was jotting down what i did during the day before i went to bed i fell asleep, and quyen and micki thought i had passed out. i dont' think i did...i was just really tired.
Friday: We all decided to eat out for breakfast today now that everyone was there. We ate at a nearby restaurant that had a breakfast special going on, and i wanted to try out macadamia nut pancakes with coconut syrup. The service was really really slow and it wasn't that crowded, so we didn't leave much tip. The pancakes were surprisingly good and the syrup wasn't too sweet. It was an enjoyable breakfast. Afterwards we got shuttle tickets to Hanauma Bay for snorkeling! We told the lady there about our Mr. K experience and she grimaced at his name. It was pretty funny to hear how the different tour people know about each other. So we went to Hanauma Bay to swim with the fishies =). It was a little difficult for me at first because my snorkel thing kept getting in the water so i ended up breathing in ocean and i banged my knee and hands on the coral at some point. However, the 2nd time around i got the hang of it and swam pretty far out, floating over the coral and watching the fish swim around and feed. It was awesome. And the water was nice and warm and clear blue. Yousuke had the pleasure of seeing sea turtles. I took an entire roll with the underwater camera i bought too, 27 exposures...
Afterwards we headed back and registered for the conference, got some free stuff. We skipped out on the opening ice cream social accidentally...quyen and i were waiting for micki, karen, and trung to come back but they came when there was about an hour left, so we decided to prepare dinner and cook it when yousuke came back. We had a big pasta dinner with meatballs and two types of sauces, wine, and other things i can't remember. The pasta boobs ended up looking like feet or something (we were joking around, "they plump when you cook 'em!"). More drinking games, played cards, etc. We went to sleep pretty early because we had a 6:30 am wake up call for the conference.
Saturday. early wake up to get to the buses at 7am. The conference was held at the University of Hawaii campus, which looked okay. nothing too spectacular. I ran into Theresa over there...it was way random. She's an officer at the Cal Poly Pomona chapter. Us girls didn't feel like attending the first set of workshops so we hung out at the bookstore and i was able to go on the internet for the first time all week. Man, i had sooo much junk mail. But it was nice to talk to some friends after being away from them for so long. i really wished they were all there to experience hawaii with me. Yousuke's presentation went really well; it was a lot of fun. At lunch UCI's chapter won a couple of awards, which was cool. We didn't go to the next set of workshops again, but the bookstore was closed this time around, so we just sat around and chatted. The last workshop we attended was a personality workshop, "what color crayon are you?" discussing how to work with people with different personalities. it was pretty interesting. We finally were able to leave the conference and had little time to get ready for the luau/dinner show.
Now, i thought a luau would be on the beach, fire going, roast pig, hula dancers, etc. This luau was more like a dinner theatre, but it wasn't even dinner, it was a buffet, which wasn't that great. THe show was pretty cool, but as it was a dinner show, we couldn't take pictures. We did manage to get a picture with soem of the guy dancers afterwards...and we convinced them to take their shirts off too, hee hee. Since we had dinner so early, we had tons of time during the night to do stuff...but we all separated. yousuke went off with the ucla/usc group so it was just me, quyen, karen, trung, micki, and victoria and amir from ucsd. we walked around town i think, hung out in our penthouse for a bit...the night was really vague, unfortunately. quyen and i wanted to hang out and party or something, but people were off doing their own things and since we weren't in the same hotel as the rest of the conference folk, we didn't know who was having parties or going clubbing or anything. the the 7 of us went to the beach and walked along the shore. it was really pretty with the night sky and the lights from the street. there isn't much sand at waikiki, compared to a place like Newport, so it's pretty well lit. victoria left us at one point during the night, so it was just us 6. oh wait, i remember now. quyen and i got separated from the other 5 b/c they wanted to play in the water and we didn't want to, so we watched some people playing chess...and some random man started talking to us and telling us about sights to see and places to eat in the city. the others left and we eventually met up with them again later that night and walked on the beach some more. the others (trung, karen, micki, and amir) wanted to play in the water so quyen and i just sat and watched them and moped. hehe. it was a really nice night, not too warm, not too cold, small waves, beautiful night sky, light breeze. it made us a little sad that we weren't there "with" anyone. hehe, a little bitter too...quyen had her parrot bay bottle with her and she took a couple of swigs when no one was looking. after about an hour and a half we decided to leave the 4 of them and head back to the hotel and chatted with the security guard for a bit, talking about things to do and not to do. he and the other man from before convinced us not to try seeing the waterfalls for $37 so we ended up doing something else the next day...
Sunday: (tired from reading yet?) the last day of the conference, i just turned in my eval and got my t-shirts and quyen and i went back to the room and made breakfast. we had soo much food left over and we had to finish most of it before we left. karen and trung wanted to stay and go to the beach, so quyen and i went to the flea market by aloha stadium, near pearl harbor. we managed to haggle the prices of some things to a really cheap price. things there were about a dollar or two cheaper than the international marketplace. After we got back we went to the beach again, for the last time =( we ate at Duke's restaurant for their breakfast buffet, which was pretty good...tasty mahi mahi. quyen joked to the waiter that it was trung's birthday (which it wasn't) but he still believed her so we got a free dessert. THe place is really cool, it overlooks the beach and everything.
i took a risk and decided to swim with my contacts on because i didn't want to be blind and not see anything while i was out there. fortunately it went all right. i wanted to try to find this straightaway that we could see from our penthouse (can't get enough saying that, hee hee) that was all sand and no rocks and stayed pretty shallow from what i could tell. i don't know if i found it on the shore, but i didn't have as many problems with the rocks as i did before. quyen and i were also watching this one group of japaense guys horsing around on the beach. it was really funny and cool. they'd run around in circles around people (who were just staring at them), stop, pick up one guy in the group and throw him in the water, run around some more, stop, and bury someone in the sand. this woudl keep going on and they were such an energetic, happy group it transferred over to us. quyen had the excellent idea of asking if she could take a picture with them.
After that, Micki had to leave to catch her flight, so we sent her off with well wishes. There was gonna be a movie on the beach that night, but we got lazy and ended up gong out for dinner at a seafood place (i actually managed to finish most of my food - steak and shrimp) we walked around one of the malls that had a walkthrough aquarium until closing. Sunday night was pretty blah, we didn't end up doign much, just hanging out in the penthouse, and i fell asleep for about half of it on the couch. no drinking games or anything! i was hoping for a last game of queens.
Monday: woke up to a last sunrise =( i got souvenir food from the ABC store (which one?! hehe) and met up with victoria and she went with me to the hard rock cafe to get a shirt for my brother, and then finished up packing and cleaning up. We grabbed lunch at Jack in the Box and waited for our limo to pick us up. yup, a limo =) hey, it was the same price as a taxi, why not travel back to the mainland in style? We got everythign checked in and went through the carryon security, where yousuke pointed out that 800 speed film may get damaged in the x-ray machine....and our underwater cameras were 800 speed. i didn't see the sign! i'm short and the signe blended into the wall. anyway, i hope my snorkeling pics turn out okay...mailed out my postcards and found out our flight was delayed about 1/2 hour or so (because of the stupid cold california storms!!!) i unfortunately had the middle seat this time on a fairly crowded flight, but it wasn't so bad. the cookie was good, as usual, and they showed The Emperor's Club, which i hadn't seen yet and i really liked it. When the movie was over, the sky had turned to night and quyen and i started feeling sadder because it wasn't sunny anymore...no more nice warm sunny hawaii =(
and so we got back around 10pm and it was cold. boo.
let's reminisce!
