Where is My Mind?

3.14.2004

had a small scare saturday morning. every morning, on the way to work, i always check to see if my car is where i put it the night before. i'd gone to Barnes & Noble friday night to study, and it's a little intimidating sometimes when i leave at closing because all these cars are still around, and all these kids are hanging out at either B&N or Starbucks next door. and when they leave, they burn rubber through the parking lot (lots of pimped out, souped up rice rockets, i was surprised. i guess the asian population increases as you move up to suburbia). Anyway, i drove home and parked in front of my place like always.

saturday, i had an mcat practice test at the NIH and when i walked outside to go to the metro, i did my usual "look for my car" and it wasn't there. i froze. looked around the entire area, and it wasn't there. another car was in the spot i had parked in the night before. i couldn't really freak out because i had to get to campus, so i went on, hoping i was hallucinating and it would be there when i get back. the thought of it being stolen creeped into my mind a few times during the test, so even though my score did improve, it could've been better had i not been so preoccupied. when i got back, my car still wasn't there. fuck. tried calling my roommate but her cellphone went off in her room; she hadn't taken it with her. finally called the police department to ask if it had been towed (that had crossed my mind because i finally noticed the permits on the other cars, but my roommate said i should be okay if i parked in an open space or our designated spot). the police department said my car wasn't listed in the tow log. shit. they said they'd send someone over. i couldn't believe it, because why would my car be targeted when there were LOTS more cars around that were more expensive and stealable? and my neighborhood is pretty safe. fortunately they called back, saying it HAD been towed, and gave me the information to get my car back. erin drove me into the heart of rockville suburbia to get it (loads of thanks).

sarah had her car towed in irvine once, and it was such a hassle for her to get it back...needed registration papers, etc. i forgot how much it cost. in my situation, all i needed was $129 and the keys. no papers.

all in all, i'm surprised i lasted a month without getting towed. in irvine i would've been towed after 2 nights. but i don't want to go through that again.
