Where is My Mind?

Gone back to Cali

Working on all these med school secondary essays is opening a lot of memories and gates that i'd closed FOR A REASON! Argh. All these bad memories from elementary school, anxiety, depression, earthquakes, friends, stealing, etc, all flooding back.

I am currently trying to get into a groove with respect to the pile of secondaries that i have to fill out. I figure I will work on 2-3 difficult essay filled ones while working on 3-4 easy no-essay apps at the same time in 2-3 day chunks, and i will hopefully get them all done in the next three weeks. Fortunately, many of the questions are similar between schools, so i can try cutting/pasting/using similar experiences for each question.

So the past weekend was spend in NorCal for my cousin Emma's wedding. Since my dork-of-a-brother had to work in Pennsylvania during that time (it sucks he wasn't able to get out of it), Christian came along for the trip as Allan's proxy. It was also his first time to Cali so he was excited, and it was his first time meeting my crazy immediate and extended family, so that was interesting. All in all i think the meetings went really well; my cousins like him and get along with him, even Camille grew to like playing with him after a day.

The rehearsal was....interesting. It was by far the longest rehearsal i've attended...even Emma and Alf were surprised at how long it was. Our reward was an awesome dinner at an authentic chinese restaurant in Oakland. Oh man how i've missed good quality Chinese food...they even served my favorite bad dish, pan fried prawns in mayonaise sauce with honey-glazed walnuts. I'm bummed there wasn't any almond jellow, but that's trivial.

The next day mom and dad took me and Christian into SF for some sightseeing. We had lunch at Fisherman's Wharf and sat on the 2nd level of a restaurant that overlooked the Wharf and the street. There was this bum that got a bunch of branches and posed as a bush on the sidewalk, and as unsuspecting pedestrians neared him, he would lower some of his branches off to the side to surprise them. It was hilarious watching people startle and scream when they see this thing moving at them. It was a creative way of panhandling...give people a laugh. Victims did the same routine - startle, scream, and laugh. Afterwards we walked around the pier, took pictures by the bay, and headed towards the Palace of Fine Arts. Unfortunately, I was too busy house gawking that i missed the turn and dad ended up driving towards the Golden Gate Bridge. We managed to save ourselves from going over the bridge (because going back into SF would've cost a toll) and ended up taking a small tour of SF hills on our way back to the Palace. It was pretty awesome going up and down these hills. Scary too, i would not want to drive a stick shift in this city. So we finally ended up at the Palace and took pictures and chilled for a bit. The lack of humidity was great. While we were sitting on a bench overlooking the lagoon, a huge flock of pidgeons flew over us. TWICE. We got so scared of getting pooped on. We returned to the hotel afterwards because Christian's leg was acting up, so we went back to chill and wait for my other cousins to arrive.

So Christian had to get his own room, and the silly thing was that my parents wanted me to sleep in their room and wouldn't let me spend the night with him. It's understandable, but still a little silly, because during the day i was pretty much always in his room whenever we were at the hotel. Silly parents. I like to think that they've raised me well enough not to do anything stupid.

(OK i spent a good 45 minutes friendster-ing, which i haven't done in a while. whoops.)

The actual wedding was really nice. The bridesmaids' dresses were tea-length strapless apple red satin dresses....verrrry pretty. Emma's dress was beautiful, strapless, plunging back, long train, hair up, beautiful necklace, she was beaming. Camille is as cute as ever and Kaylee (now 6 months old), i can hold her confidently now that i've held a 2 week old baby. It kinda sucks that we were so dependent on rides to and from places, because my parents decided to leave for the reception late, so we arrived with 10 mins left in the open bar. I got my designated 2 drinks and proceeded to get properly drunk and talkative with the rest of my cousins. Artie totally blasted me for whoring myself to the NIH and research studies. It's not that bad, and i haven't done anything invasive in a while. my druggie marks are gone from my arms =P Christian had an awesome time talking to all of my cousins and i had an awesome time seeing everyone again, i miss them so much! Emma and ALf totally went at each other with cake, i wish i'd gotten more of it on video, but i was laughing too hard to get my camera out. And i ACTUALLY DANCED! Yes i was still drunk and not self-conscious enough to care. But as the evening wore on i became stubborn again. I was talking to Emma online when i got back and she said that she and ALf were so exhausted and drunk she ended up sleeping in her wedding dress and he in his tux. I think that's so cute and adorable. They are such a happy couple and i wish them the best :)

(Note to self, awesome guestbook idea with taking JoyCam pictures of guests as they sign in)

The next day we had a Chinese buffet lunch in SF, and we arrived there 45 minutes late because of traffic and parking issues. Dad drove us over to the Golden Gate Bridge again, but apparently there was another save-yourself exit after the exit we took the last time, which led to the vista point. So we stopped and took pics, and Christian saw the Pacific for the first time, he was very excited and giddy, it was so cute :) it's all part of my master plan to lure him over to cali and get away from this awful humidity. hahaha.

Monday, the last day of the too-short vacation, was spent getting california peaches and driving to the airport. Christian and I managed to see Cecille, Juan, Camille, and Kaylee one last time because we were at the airport around the same time, just different terminals. And now i dont know when i'm going back to SoCal. sigh....

  • Wow there are some cool bars near your house. Last night we stopped by a bar on the corner of that crazy intersection... The Good Luck or something like that. In addition to the Bigfood Lodge on Los Feliz.
